Road Trip Ready with Pennzoil + DIY Kids Grab Bags

My husband and I often took road trips when we were first married.  We’d go for an 8 hour drive south to the Outer Banks for a wedding one weekend and the following weekend head 5 hours north to the Baseball Hall of Fame.  We were young, and we’d just jump in the car and go.  My things have changed! The planning required to be road trip ready with 3 children is enough to rival the fiscal planning of fortune 500 companies.

Before any road trip we need to get our family ready as well as our vehicle. Making sure we’ve kept up with our oil changes is key to a safe trip, but I dread wasting time in a waiting room. It’s even worse when you are trying to entertain 3 children. I get faces that look like this:

Last week, the forecast was calling for a possible snowstorm of doom.  Ok, not really, but it was one of those events that you think “I should run to Walmart and pick up my eggs, milk and bread”. On my way to the store I stopped to fill up the gas tank and that’s when I realized I was about 3 months and 500 miles over the recommended oil change (eek!). Luckily, my Walmart has an Auto Center.

Wait? What??? Oil change and food shopping at Walmart? Oh yes indeed!

In fact, Walmart Automotive Care Centers around the nation have added Department Managers so that your vehicle can be serviced while you shop.  How brilliant is that? I knew Walmart carried Pennzoil and since it’s a name I know and trust, I asked that they use Pennzoil Conventional Oil for my vehicle. Pennzoil conventional oil has a traditional oil base, fortified with Active Cleaning Agents™ to continuously prevent dirt and contaminants from creating performance-robbing deposits. I like avoiding contaminants whenever possible. Don’t you?

We purchased this car when it was 2 years old so I have no idea what type of oil had been used before. I (usually) keep my vehicle clean and cared for, so I opt for Pennzoil products that help clean out sludge lesser oils leave behind. Designed for complete protection, Pennzoil allows you to drive an extra of 550 miles per year vs. a dirty engine, and no other motor oil provides better protection from friction. Pennzoil gives me peace of mind that I’m using a quality oil for my vehicle.

As a busy mom, my time is valuable so it’s important that I multi-task whenever I can and get things done quickly. I stopped at a price check machine to use my scanable service ticket to check the progress of my vehicle’s service, about half an hour after I dropped off the car.  Happily, the screen read “Service Complete”. My car was ready to be picked up before my errands were finished!

I was also pleasantly surprised that the Automotive Care Center went beyond just an oil change – they also checked a list of other standard items such as my headlights, wipers, and battery and tire pressure checks. Had I not been able to drop the car off during my Walmart shopping trip it may have taken me another month or two to squeeze an oil change into my busy schedule. Plus, check out that price – $31.88! Oil change, shopping AND my time was not wasted in a waiting room. Total win-win-win!

So now that we’re road trip ready vehicle-wise, as a parent I need to prepare kid happiness-wise. I’ve begun to document our happy faces at the start of our car trips, even the short ones, just for fun!

I totally feel like we’ve got this road trip thing down.  To keep those happy faces happy, I make sure I have 5 things ready for our trip:

  1. A selection of kid-friendly movies

  2. Snacks
  3. The location of rest-stops and even an empty cup for those times nature calls along our way
  4. The kids’ learning tabletsRoad Trip Pennzoil #DropShopAndOil #ad
  5. A reasonable number of toys and stuffed travel companions

If I let the kids select the toys they will bring, we’d end up with a toy store’s worth of toys traveling with us. So, to get them excited and to keep the toys to a minimum, I’ve let the kids design their own grab bags for the trip.  In addition to a fun craft, they can only bring what fits in the bag!

  1. We’re currently in the midst of snowstorm after snowstorm here in upstate New York (not far from Baseball Hall of Fame)…and the thought of a spring or summer road trip sounds awesome right about now. I also love the fact that I can swing through Walmart and get my oil changed while also knocking some shopping errands off my list. Thanks for sharing! #client
